Frans de Gooijer, keeper of the erfgooiers history.

If you name the words Erfgooiers and farms, then about two and a halve hours later, the Naarden Frans de Gooijer would still not done with his story. His father was the last erfgooierfarmer in the walled town of Naarden. (2) However he himself never did liked to be ambitious enough to become a farmer, also his family history made him very interested in dealing with the past. At the start of the nineteen seventy's he started gathering many pieces of information about de Gooijer family, and everything he could find about them. Many boxes with maps and titles are standing in his attic. However he has to admit, it is no longer a hobby anymore.
Frans de Gooijer lives in the Gansoordstraat in Naarden, not far from the farm his grandparent used to have, which is still standing on the corner of the Pijlstraat. For about an halve century now, the farm no longer is in his family's name, when he takes walks he passes it many times and checks it all ou. However he won't say it to anybody, but he is very, very proud and is happy that his grandparent's farm is still standing and in tact.
It was one of the biggest farms in that period. he said: " I have checked out every family that lived in the farm as far back as I could. In the seventeen century the farm belonged to the Mayor of Naarden. Thirty six meters (about 108 feed) long the
building was. " I have measured it myself, and also made drawings from it all" he said.
As de Gooijer looks through an amazing amount of maps and documents, which are covering most of his dining room table, photo's, drawings, old mortgages. What ever you might think of, he has the documents or maps which he can show you. "Look here, here it is". he would say, and a drawing is being presented. The wooden backsite of the farm does no longer exist. When my grandma passed away in 1956 the farm then was transfred to a contractor. All her son's already had their own farms or had a business where dairy products were developed. The contractor demolished all the wooden barns on the property and built three houses in place of them. The farm building it self at few years past was completely renovated and divided into two homes.

Frans, this Naarden boy, was born in 1933 on a farm that his father owned, it was located in the Bussummerstraat.
His father started for himself six years before Frans was born. About all his ancestors earned their living as farmers halve way into the nineteen century in or near the walled town of Naarden. His great grandfather started to lease a parcel of land called Hofstede Crailo, where now Linda de Mol lives. (2) The grandfather Jan of Frans was born at Crailo. In 1857 great grandfather Willem started a farm in the Bussummerstraat, at a different location as where Frans' his father later (1927) settled. Each of the brothers of grandfather Jan, also started a farm in or near the walled town Naarden. The grand parents from Frans de Gooijer started their farm at the corner of the Gansoordstraat and the Pijlstraat in the year 1895.

The town farms were created to feed the troops that were defending the walled town and the The Dutch Waterline (4), but also the citizens of Naarden. In time of war, and when the walled town was surrounded by enemy troops, it was very practical way to survive. With the cows and the grain that was grown, the troops would be strong and never run out of food. However the farmers because of their unique practish lost their farm products not to there own troops, but twice to the France troops that did conquered the town twice in the year 1672 and then again when the army of Napoleon came in the year 1813, they stayed in the town for quite some time. (November 1813 - May 1814) There were about sixteen town farms at that time until the 1940's. From which seven of them were not related to the Erfgooiers. The farmers called Erfgooiers had certain right (common lands) to let their farm animals, mainly cows, graze on the Common Lands, which was called shere right (schaarrecht) The oldest farms dated back to the seventeen-century. No traces are found from any town farms from the earlier period of history.

At this time there are only five farms left in the walled town, but you can no longer recognize them ever to have been a farm some time ago. The little farms mostly were consisting of a farmhouse and some wooden barns on the property. "The farm of my grandma and from my dad were one of the biggest farms in the walled town". As Frans would tell you "When I went back into the history of the farm and I found that in earlier times the family of Ruysdael had lived there of wich one of them was the famous artist painter Ruysdael. That was such a tremendous finding for me to find out.

Frans de Gooijer himself did not care to become a farmer himself. He said "When we as children had to bring the cows back to the barn, I tried to hide in many ways as possible. When I could not hide or get away from those shores of picking them up out of the pasture. I then would look at the markings on the cows hide and see of there was a likenese of outlines from some country, by doing that I learned which cow was which.(5) After growing up I went as soon as possible trying to do some other kind of work. (after my military service) First I became a technical draftsman, and then later became head draftsman at the Stork Company. (in Amsterdam) Frans said that he always had the interest in knowing more about history and geography. Being a child I was always very interested in the Dutch 80-year war and the Dutch Golden Age. "I was very interested in those things when going to school during the Second World War, it was very intriguing, to know. The biggest interest in the farms and 't Gooiland Naarden came some what later in his life. He said: "When my dad had to leave his farm in 1967, he went and measured every inch of the farm. He had a feeling that was important thing he should do. The town's authority did nothing to preserve anything of the past; all they were interested in was more space for building when it because available. I had read about the Erfgooiers history, but the actual got the addiction of that historical period mid seventy's. My intention was, to keep it small but very detailed. Then it became Gooiland. He had found out that there was never much written about the Erfgooiers by themselves, but always through outsiders. Many stories that he found were about conquering and waging wars within the kingdom. My real thoughts were finding out about the organization and how it really operated, and also how the citizens of the town benefited by their existence. "I belongs to the original inhabitants of Gooiland and so I didn't want to loose any of that history from there past".
He said: "From that moment on I been actively busy in obtaining any and all of information and documentation about those historical periods. Since his retirement, Mr. de Gooijer is often to be found in the archives from Naarden and Hilversum. He is also very busy in the organisation called Stad en Lande Stichting (Common Lands of Gooiland Foundation), of which he is also a member. He keeps himself very busy with the restoration of the archives concerning the Erfgooiers. In addition he is a member of the Historical Society of Blaricum. The Naarden born Frans is kind of sad about his own home town, of which he says: "They have not done enough to preserve that part of Naarden's history", and "there is very little interest in what I'm doing". Since 1987 he has written many articles in some magazines, one of which is called The Omroeper. By chance I wrote an article about the town farms, and it was published in a magazine named Tussen Vecht en Eem (Between the rivers Vecht and Eem). But they cannot always use what I want to say, once in a while I really get annoyed, that I'm the only one around that is interested in those particular time periods. Most of all I miss the "real citizens" of this town, so I could talk to them about those parts of our history. In the village of Blaricum, were I often go, there is were the history of the Erfgooiers is more vivid and were I can find some people with the same interest.

In short overview:
De Gooijer is at the present time is very busy in obtaining much information as possible and then set it into print or to add on to his web site (6) on the internet for all to see and to read. Many times it has been called a selfish idea. On his part, and that he only does it to please himself. At this time now that I'm 69 (2002) and anything can happen, it would be very tragic if everything that I have gathered and found would be lost. This kind of information needs to be salvaged. My wife often makes a remark, that if and when I pass away, she will hire a dumpster to load up all that junk, files, paper and boxes. In her own words, she said to him" I will clear the mess", " then finally the attic will be empty and clean of all those boxes". I really don't want to think about what would happened if that really did happened. All that important information would be gone, some of it very important and some very world shocking pieces of information what our fore fathers had done in those days of the past, I think they really should be saved. (not very world shocking)
I told one of my friends that travels much around the world " I only travel in the past". Sometimes when I go for a walk down the street, I would suddenly ask myself "What was I going after" and "What was I going to do with it". Many times I spend way too much time with this so-called hobby!
I really mean that, I stay far too busy in finding out what happened in the past history of Naarden and the Erfgooiers, but I think I'm racing against time, to preserve what has past.

Op reis in het verleden
Frans de Gooijer, hoeder van de historie van de erfgooiers

Noem de woorden erfgooiers en boerderijen en twee en een half uur later is Naarder Frans de Gooijer nog steeds niet uitgepraat. Zijn vader was de laatste erfgooierboerin de Vesting Naarden. Hoewel hij zelf nooit de ambitie heeft gehad boer te worden, heeft zijn familiegeschiedenis hem gegrepen. Sinds het begin van de jaren zeventig verzamelt De Gooijer alles wathij er maar over kan vinden. Mappen, dozen vol staan er op zijn zolder. Inmiddels moet hij ook toegeven dat het bijna geen hobby meer is.

Frans de Gooijer woont in de Gansoordstraat, niet ver van de nog bestaande boerderij van zijn grootouders op de hoek met de Pijlstraat. De woning is al een halve eeuw niet meer in de familie, maar regelmatig loopt hij er nog even langs. Hoewel hij het niet expliciet zegt, is het duidelijk dat de boerderij van zijn grootouders een beetje zijn grote trots is. "Het was een van de grootste boerderijen uit die tijd. Ik heb alle bewoners nagetrokken zover ik kon. In de zeventiende eeuw heeft het aan de burgemeester van Naarden toebehoord. Zesendertig met lang was de boederij. Ik heb het zelf nagemeten en er tekeningen van gemaakt."
De Gooijer rommelt wat tussen zijn mappen en papieren die de hele eettafel bedekken. Foto's, tekeningen, oude koopaktes. Je kan het zo gek niet bedenken of De Gooijer heeft het wel in een map zitten. "Kijk hier heb ik het" , zegt hij, een tekening tevoorschijn trekkend. "Die houten achterkant bestaat niet meer. Toen mijn oma in 1956 overleed ging de boederij naar een aannemer. Al haar zonen hadden inmiddels zelf al een boerderij, of hadden iets in de melkhandel. De aanemer heeft toen de houten schuren afgebroken en drie huisjes neergezet. De boerderij zelf is enkele jaren later opgeknapt en in twee woningen verdeeld."


De Naarder werd in 1933 geboren op een boederij in de Bussummerstraat. Zijn vader
was zes jaar daarvoor voor zichzelf begonnen. Zijn voorouders verdienden sinds halverwege de negentiende eeuw de kost als boer in Naarden. Overgrootvader Willem begon als pachter op het landgoed Oud Crailo, waar nu (2002) Linda de Mol woont. In 1857 betrok Willem zijn eigen boerderij, een andere dan waar Frans' vader Herman later in terecht zal komen. Willem's kinderen begonnen ook een boerderij in Naarden. Jan en Klaasje, de grootouders van de Gooijer betrokken de boerderij op de hoek van de Gansoordtraat met de Pijlstraat in 1895.
"De vestingboerderijen werden gebouwd om het garnizoen en de bevolking van voedsel te voorzien. Zeker ten tijde van omsingeling was dat heel praktisch. Door de koeien en rogge kon hert leger op krachten blijven. De boeren zijn op die manier tot twe keer toe hun verbouwde producten kwijtgeraakt. Alleen dan niet aan het eigen leger maar aan het Franse leger, dat in 1672 en in 1813 onder Napoleon Naareden binnen walste en hier lang gelegerd bleef."
De vesting telde in 1945 nog zeventien vestingboerderijen. Daarvan waren er zeven van niet-erfghooiers. De erfgooiers hadden het recht hun vee op de meentgronden te laten grazen, het zogenaamde schaarrecht. "De oudste boerderijen stammen uit de zeventiende eeuw. Van vroegere perioden zijn geen boerderijen bewaard gebleven. Nu zijn er nog slechts vijf over, al zijn ze niet allemaal herkenbaar. De kleine boederijen bestonden uit een voorhuis met wat houten schuurtjes op het erf. Die van mijn oma en mijn vader behoorden tot de grootste en oudste."
"Ik heb de bewoners van mijn vaders boerderij zover mogelijk terug gezocht. Blijkt dat familie van de bekende schildersfamilie Ruysdael daar gewoond heeft. Dat zijn leuke ontdekkingen."

Drukken
De Gooijer zag zelf niets in het boerenleven. "Als wij als kinderen de koeien in melkenstijd van de gemeenschappelijke weilanden moesten ophalen, probeerde ik me zo vaak mogelijk te drukken. Kwam ik er niet onderuit, dan probeerde ik landen of werelddelen te herkennen in de tekening op de huis van de koeien. Zo leerde onze koeien uit de honderden anderen herkennen. Ik ben zo snel mogelijk iets anders gaar doen. Ik werd technisch tekenaar en ben onder meer hoofdconstructeur bij Stork In Amsterdam geweest."
De Naarder zegt altijd al interesse te hebben gehad in geschiedenis en aardrijkskunde. "Ik werd als kind gegrepen door de verhalen over de 80-jarige oorlog en de Gouden Eeuw. Daar was veel aandacht voor toe ik in de Tweede Wereldoorlog naar school ging. Machtig mooi vond ik dat. De interesse in de boerengeschiedenis van het Gooi en Naarden in het bijzonder is eigenlijk pas veel later gekomen. Toen mijn vader eind jaren zestig uit zijn boederij moest, heb ik daar alles opgemeten. Ik had het gevoel dat ik dat moest doen. De gemmente deed niets, die dacht alleen maar aan de bouwgrond die vrij kwam."
"Ik las toen ook al veel over de erfgooiers geschiedenis. Maar de verslaving is pas echt begonnen zo haverwege de jaren zeventig. Ik wilde me bezig houden met geschiedenis, maar het wel klein en overzichtelijk houden. Dat werd het Gooi. Ik had ontdekt dat er wel veel over de erfgooiers was geschreven, maar altijd door buitenstaanders, nooit door hen zelf. Veel verhalen over vroeger gaan vaak over veldslagen en oorlogen of de koninklijke familie. Ik wilde uitzoeken hoe de maatschappij in elkaar stak, hoe het de gewone burger verging. Ik behoor tot die oorspronkelijke bewoners van het Gooi. Die geschiedenis wilde ik niet verloren laten gaan. Vanaf dat moment ben ik het archief in gedoken, verhalen gaan opschrijven en documenten gaan verzamelen."
Sinds zijn pensionering is De Gooijer vaak in het archief van Naarden te vinden. Hij zit in het bestuur van de Stad en Lande Stichtin en heeft zich bezig gehouden met de restauratie van het erfgooiersarchief. Ook is hij lid van de historische vereniging Blaricum. De Naarder betreurt het dat zijn eigen stad zo weinig afgiftenpunten zijn voor zijn verhalen. De Gooijer schrijft in het historische tijdschrift van Blaricum . "Ik schrijf sinds 1887 regelmatig voor 'De Omroeper', toevallig afgelopen december 2001 nog een heel verhaal over de vestingboerderijen, en ook wel eens voor 'Tussen Vecht en Eem' Maar ze kunnen niet altijd alles gebruiken. Ik ben erg bevlogen in wat ik doe, maar ik ben zo'n beetje de enige hier met belangstelling voor de gooiers. In Blaricum, waar ik ook veel ben, leeft de geschiedenis van de erfgooiers veel meer. Daar vind ik meer gelijkgestemden."

In de container
De Gooijer is de laatste tijd versneld bezig om zo veel mogelijk informatie te verzamelen en vast te leggen. In bladen, boekjes en op het internet. "Vaak is het puur voor mezelf. "Ik ben nu, in 2002, negenenzestig geworden en er kan van alles overkomen. Het zou toch vreselijk zijn als alles weg raakt. Dit moet allemaal bewaard blijven. Mijn vrouw maakt grag de grap dat als ik er niet meer ben, ze een container voor laat rijden en alles er in laat gooien. Weg ermee, opgeruimd staat netjes. Is eindelijk de zolder weer leeg, zegt ze dan. Ik moet er niet aan denken dat het gebeurd. Al die informatie, het zijn geen wereldschokkende zaken. Maar zoiets, de geschiedenis van je voorvaderen, moet bewaard blijven."
"Ik zeg wel eens tegen een vriend van mij die de hele wreld over reist: ik reis eigenlijk altijd in het verleden. En dat meen ik echt. Ik ben altijd met dat verleden bezig, zit er helemaal in. Soms misschien wel wat teveel. Dan loop ik verstrooid rond en denk aan het einde van de straat: wat ging ik nou toch al weer doen? ."
